The Liars' cell phones are beeping and ringing with an incoming text message, and Alison says that it is from A, and when Ezra asks what it says, Aria reads it out loud, "Did you miss me, bitches. -A". Emily says that it can't be, "Shana is dead", and when Hanna asks Spencer where Toby is, a second explosion inside the Cavanaugh house occurs leaving the Liars, Ezra, Caleb and a few onlookers ducking for cover.

In Emily's bedroom, Spencer is on the phone with Toby and asks him to call her later. After ending the call, Aria asks Spencer what Toby said and she tells the girls that nobody was inside the Cavanaugh house when it exploded, but Toby's dad broke his leg while trying to avoid a falling tree. When Hanna says that it could have been worse, Spencer tells her that Caleb’s with Toby at the hospital. Alison wonders if the text message they received means they were wrong about Shana, and Aria comments that 'A' is alive and knows that she killed Shana. With Emily convinced that Shana was 'A' and therefore couldn't have sent the text, Hanna reminds her they got a text seconds after the house blew up, "either Shana can cause explosions from the grave, or A is back". Spencer says she thinks that 'A' never left, and Aria says that 'A' has been here the whole time, just waiting to resurface. As Alison wonders why 'A' would resurface now, and Spencer says that's what they have to figure out.

In the Brew, Hanna spots Caleb sitting down at one of the tables and walks over to him. Commenting that he looks as if he's got as much sleep as her, Caleb tells her he was with Toby until around an hour ago, and when Hanna asks how Toby is, Caleb says that he's still pretty shaken. Hanna still doesn't understand why 'A' would blow the Cavanaugh house up when they were all a few doors down, and Caleb reminds her, "A doesn't shoot and miss". Asking if Hanna's seen the newspaper, he hands it over and Hanna is shocked to find that the police are not looking into what caused the gas leak at the Cavanaugh home. When Caleb suggests that the girls should tell the cops everything, Hanna wonders what they could say, "we don't have a face or a name". Caleb tells her this isn't a game, "A blew up a house", and Hanna says she can't, it'll unravel too much, "things happened while you were gone". Caleb tells her he's noticed, and that he won't be staying long. Hanna says that she just thought if he wasn't in Ravenswood, he would be here, but Caleb says he doesn't want to commit to anything. Getting up, Hanna tells him it's late and that she should probably be getting to school.

In Ezra's apartment, Aria tells Ezra that Shana wasn't 'A', and that she killed an innocent person, but Ezra reminds her that Shana was not innocent. Aria tells him the cops aren't going to believe that when they find out she's been covering Shana's murder, and "it's only a matter of time before A exposes what I did". Ezra tells her that they don't know if this person has any idea of what happened in New York, and when Aria asks Ezra what he is doing, he tells her he's looking for a connection between Mrs DiLaurentis and Bethany Young. When Aria questions him why, Ezra explains that he doesn't think he was to far off with his Mrs D theory. Aria picks up that Ezra thinks A killed Bethany and Mrs D, and Ezra telling her that would be a connection. He goes on to say when he was writing his book he interviewed some of the staff at Radley and he thinks the name Bethany Young came up, he just doesn't know which file it is in. As Aria tells him that she can help him look after school, he tells her that they're going to get through this.

Walking into her bedroom to grab a few school books, Spencer turns around to find Peter standing in her doorway. Surprised, Spencer says she didn't see his car in the driveway, and Peter tells her it's in a garage. When Spencer asks why he isn't at work, Peter says that it's a little hard to concentrate when his wife and daughter are living at a hotel. Telling him that she has class in ten minutes, Spencer tries to walk past him, but Peter blocks her and asks her what is going on, but Spencer tells him he'll have to discuss that with Veronica. Spencer tells him that they know that he lied about his and Melissa’s whereabouts the night Jessica DiLaurentis died. Spencer asks him what will he do when the cops find out that the pills that were used to kill Jessica was in Peter’s medicine cabinet. Peter tells Spencer that he did not kill Jessica. Spencer says that she knows he was just trying to protect her. He is adamant he'd never take anybody's life to cover up for Spencer. Spencer demands to know where Melissa and Peter was that night.

In the school cafeteria, Spencer confirms to Aria that Peter and Melissa drove to the lake and talked, but he wouldn't say what they talked about or why he lied. Aria asks if Spencer has talked to Melissa, and Spencer says she's left like five messages. Ending her phone call with Ezra, Aria tells Spencer that Ezra is trying to find a link between Bethany and Mrs D, and when Spencer asks if he's found one, Aria tells her he hasn't. Spencer queries Aria that she's going over to Ezra's later, and Aria says she's going to help him sort through his files. Spencer wonders if that's the only reason, and when Aria doesn't answer, Spencer asks if there is something going on between the two of them, but Aria tells her no. As Spencer questions Aria why she brought Ezra to Emily's the previous night, Aria admits that "we had a slip". Putting down her fork, Spencer bewilders the slip, before Aria admits "well, technically it as two slips". A shocked Spencer says that she thought Aria said she'd never go their again, and Aria says that "I meant it when she said it", before Spencer asks if she's forgetting about what he did to her, what he did to them. Aria tells her no, but Spencer reminds her that she couldn't "eat or sleep for weeks after you found out about that book", and Aria says that he took a bullet for them, but Spencer says it doesn't change the fact that he deceived her for years.

Alison, Hanna and Emily meet up with Spencer and Aria, and seeing Emily looking uneasy, Aria asks if she's okay, only for Alison to say that Emily practically jumped out of her skin when somebody dropped their lunch tray. When Hanna makes a comment about the "new normal", Emily says she knew it was too good to be true, and Spencer telling her the last few days have been "nothing but crap". Hanna asks Spencer if Toby's still at the hospital, and Spencer tells her he's with Jenna and her mom. Emily asks Hanna how long Caleb's in town, and Hanna shrugs, telling her she doesn't know. Getting a text message, Alison is shocked, and shows the girls the snapchat video she received of Jessica being buried in the Hastings backyard, along with a message - "I buried your mom the same way I watched her bury you. -A", before the content automatically deletes after a few short seconds.

In Hanna’s kitchen, the Liars discuss the identity of ‘A.’ Aria thinks it could be some they haven’t even thought of yet. Spencer is in deep thought, her face radiating relief and grief at the same time. She finally speaks saying that her dad did not kill Jessica. She starts crying saying how she accused him of killing Jessica even though he did not do it. Aria suggests that her dad could be ‘A.’ Spencer looks at her and Aria apologizes saying that she is just putting it out there. Spencer says that his dad can’t be ‘A’ because he thought Spencer killed Alison, not Bethany. Ali thinks that they are back to square one but Aria tells her that Ezra thinks Bethany could lead them to ‘A.’ Spencer says that they need to help Ezra uncover more about Bethany. Ali says that she cannot wait for answers and she need to leave town. Emily says that she just got back. Ali reminds her that she only came back because she thought ‘A’ was dead. Hanna wonders why ‘A’ is playing games instead of just simply killing Ali if that is what he/she wants. Ali says she doesn’t know and she cannot stick around to figure it out. Emily says that if she leaves they cannot protect her anymore. Aria reminds Alison that the cops are watching her every move. Hanna tells her that the whole world knows she is alive and Spencer tells her that thus she has no place to hide.

n Radley with another detective, Lt. Tanner tells a staff member that she is so disappointed in their lack of co-operation, "but when you change your mind, there's my number". Spencer overhears Lieutenant Tanner talking a Radley staff member, so she grabs a magazine and sits on the couch to try and obscure herself. As Eddie walks out, Spencer thanks him for coming out and the pair hug. Eddie tells her he as a few minutes before asking how she is doing, and Spencer tells him she's doing well. She asks if he heard about the Cavanaugh settlement, and he tells her he has, and he's glad the family got some money, but Spencer tells him they would have preferred the truth. Eddie also tells Spencer that he heard about Mrs DiLaurentis, and when Spencer says she doesn't really think it was a coincidence that Bethany Young was buried in the DiLaurentis backyard, Eddie says her he doesn't either. Spencer asks if Eddie knew Bethany well, and looking over his shoulder, Eddie tells her that if he did, he can't talk about it. Noticing the security camera, Spencer suggests that they get coffee later, and Eddie tells her, "I can't about Bethany, or any other patient. Not to cops, or reporters, or you". Eddie says that he wishes he could help Spencer, and when someone yells out to him saying he has a phone call, he tells Spencer that it was good seeing her.

Walking down the stairs in the Marin house, Alison says to Hanna that she should never have come back to Rosewood. Hanna tells her she get's that she is scared, they all do, and that's why Alison is staying with her, and Alison says she "you can't just babysit me forever, Hanna". As the doorbell rings, Alison tells her to not just open it, and checking who is outside through the window, Hanna tells her it's just Travis, before Alison says she'll be in the kitchen. Stepping outside, Hanna tells Travis that this is a nice surprise, and a confused, Travis tells her they had plans to go to the Grille at 7pm. Seeing Hanna doesn't remember, he tells her he knows she wasn't drunk when they made their plans, and Hanna apologises saying that with everything going, she totally spaced. She tells him she would go, but Alison is inside, and she doesn't want to leave her alone right now as she's going through a tough time, but Hanna tells him not to believe everything he sees. Hanna also apologises for her behaviour at Lucas' party and hopes she didn't do anything too embarrassing, and Travis tells her she just on her phone all night trying to call someone, and Hanna tells him she doesn't remember that. Travis asks her if they're okay, and Hanna tells him they are. Kissing him, Hanna tells Travis that she'll call him when Alison leaves.

Hanna comes in to find Alison on her patio, talking to someone on the phone. Hanna wants to know who Ali was talking with and Ali says that it does not matter. Hanna thinks Ali is making plans to go somewhere. Ali does not answer but Hanna does not give up. She asks her again and Ali finally tells her that she cannot live in a world where she jumps every time the doorbell rings and asks Hanna to not tell the others. Hanna asks her what she is going to do this time. Ali says that she does not want to live like this but she cannot stay at Rosewood while the psychopath is out there. Hanna agrees to help Ali escape.

Ezra and Aria are going through Ezra's research when Aria stumbles on a photo of them together, and Ezra tells her it was a fun day the day the photo was taken. As Aria begins to talk about what happened the other night, Ezra cuts her off, "felt right, didn't it?", but Aria tells him it doesn't mean things can go back to the way that they were. Ezra questions what it does mean, and Aria says, "I'm not going to pretend I don't miss it, us, because I do", and Ezra tells her he does too. Aria then tells him that she then remembers everything that happened, "how we met, all the lies that you told", and while Ezra says he wishes he could go back and change things, Aria reminds him he can't, "and the other night was a mistake". As someone knocks on Ezra's door, he gets up to answer it, and Lieutenant Tanner introduces herself, and wonders if she could ask him a few questions. Handing Ezra an envelope that was outside his door, Tanner wonders if she can come in. Ezra hesitates before allowing Tanner entry, and walking back inside his apartment, he drops the envelope on the photo of he and Aria to cover it up.

Looking at all the boxes in his apartment Tanner asks Ezra if he is moving out. He tells her that he is just getting rid of some old school files. Ezra asks Tanner what she wanted to know. She tells him that she has some questions on Shana Fring. Ezra says that he thought the NYPD were handling the case. LT. Tanner tells him that since Shana was a Rosewood resident, Rosewood PD is helping NYPD to get further information on her. She asks him if he knew Shana well. Ezra tells her that Shana was never Ezra’s student. She asks him if he ever told Shana about the Fitzgerald theatre in New York. Ezra says that he never told any of his students about it. Ezra tells that it came as a shock to his family and him that her body was found there. She bring back Ezra getting shot the night before Shana was killed and how the police found gun residue on Shana’s body. Ezra is confused and asks her what the question is. Lt. Tanner asks him if he remembers anything about his mother, something that would help the investigation. Ezra tells her that he already said everything he knew. Lt. Tanner thanks him and leaves. Ezra asks her to let him know if he could be of any further help. Thanking Ezra for his time, Tanner stands to leave and turning, she notices a female jacket and handbag on Ezra's table.

In the Rosewood High locker rooms, Paige has just gotten out of the pool when Emily comes up to her demanding Paige tell her who Mona is working with. Paige says that she can't tell her, especially after the way Alison treated Mona. Emily says that Mona altered that video, and Paige tells her even if Mona did, Mona didn't make Alison say the things she said, "Alison isn't sorry about the way she treated anybody. She's still the same manipulative person she always was". Sitting down next to Paige, Emily tells her whoever blew up the Cavanaugh house is now threatening Alison, and when Paige says she thought it was a gas leak, Emily tells that someone caused that leak. Getting that Emily thinks Mona was behind it, Emily tells her it's possible, "with a little help from her friends", and Paige wonders why Mona would want to blow up the Cavanaugh house. Emily says that's what they're trying to figure out, and that she's aware how Paige feels about Alison, but could "you live with yourself if something happened to her, knowing that you could have done something to stop it?"

Spencer tells Veronica to talk with Peter. She thinks that he deserves to know that she is going to leave him. Suddenly Peter comes into the restaurant and Spencer tells Veronica that she asked him to come. Spencer leaves, leaving Veronica and Peter together. Spencer looks over at her parents talking with each other. She smiles when her father touches Veronica’s hand.

Up in Hanna's bedroom, Alison tells Hanna that Noel is going to pick her up from Princeton station at 10pm, and when Alison says she needs Hanna to take her to Newton station at 8pm, Hanna tells her she'll drive her to Princeton. As Hanna is grabbing clothes out of her wardrobe, Alison tells her she doesn't have to give her so much, but Hanna says that she can't just walk out of her house with a bag of clothes. Alison says that she wants to go see her dad before she leaves, and she needs to grab a few things before she leaves from her house. Hanna tells her she'll drop her off now, and she'll go get cash, and Alison should just call her whenever she's ready to Alison. As Hanna is walking out of her bedroom, Alison thanks her, "you're really saving me, Hanna", and she hugs her.

After Lieutenant Tanner has left, Aria tells Ezra that they need to get the boxes out of his apartment quick, and when Ezra tells Aria to slow down, Aria is convinced Tanner is probably already on her way back with a search warrant. Ezra tells her that Tanner is not on her way back, and when Aria asks how he can say that as "she basically said that she knows Shana was the one who shot you", Ezra questions why Tanner would want to search his apartment. Aria tells him Tanner knows Ezra is hiding something, and Ezra tells her that "she's going to need a whole lot more than suspicion to get a search warrant". Aria goes on to say that if Tanner does come back she's going to find proof that Ezra was lying about how well he knew Shana, and that Alison wasn't kidnapped. Ezra says that he could move the stuff into his storage unit, but Aria realises that if it's registered in his name, they'll search the storage unit as well, before Aria suggests that they just put everything in her attic. Ripping open the envelope that was left for him, Ezra finds a drawing and wonders what it is. Walking over to him, Aria says that she thinks it Mrs DiLaurentis, and when Ezra asks how she can tell, Aria explains, "that's her house, she was obsessed with her roses, and she definitely wore scarves like that". Flipping the page over, Ezra reads the signature, "Bethany", and when Aria questions how many Bethany's he knows, he tells her just one, "and she was buried in Mrs DiLaurentis' backyard". Aria wonders who would want him to have this picture, and when he wonders why, Aria tells him her money is on 'A', before Ezra realises that he still has his security camera's up in the hallway.

Hanna is counting money when Emily bursts into the room saying that Paige told her Lucas and Melissa are working with Mona to bring Ali down. Hanna is surprised to hear that Melissa is working with them as well. She asks if Emily told Spencer or not. Emily says that she did not yet. Emily spots the train ticket and realizes Alison is trying to leave. Emily is upset that Hanna didn't tell them and wonders if perhaps something else is going on.

As Coach yells out that practice starts in one minute, Paige reaches into her locker for her goggles. As she's reaching for her swim cap, a dead rat fall out of it and onto the ground causing Paige to scream.

Walking into the DiLaurentis living room, Alison turns on a lamp and grabbing her phone, she calls her dad asking where he is. With her dad not coming home tonight, she tells him she'll just sleepover at Hanna's and tells him that she loves him. Looking around the living room, Alison starts heading up the stairs. After Alison has headed up the stairs, A shadowy figure steps into the living room and switches off the lamp Alison had turned off.

In her bedroom, Spencer picks up a photo of her parents, before sitting down at her laptop and typing 'Bethany Young' into the search bar and scrolling through the webpages. As she clicks on the Radley Sanitarium webpage, Spencer picks up a notebook and starts to jot down some information.

In her bedroom, Alison grabs a yellow scarf from her wardrobe and wraps it around her neck before grabbing a drawer from her dresser and emptying the contents onto her bed. Pulling up a fake wooden liner from the drawer, Alison rips off some fake ID's with the names 'Marnie Winter' and 'Rebecca Kelly', along with some money. Putting everything back in the drawer and placing it back in her dresser, Alison grabs her handbag and with one last look around her bedroom, she turns the light off and walks out. Walking back downstairs, Alison notices the lamp she had turned on it now off and calls out to her dad to see if he is home. A figure walks up behind Alison and knocks her to the ground with a hockey stick, before stepping on her back as Alison is trying to crawl away. Grabbing the tail ends of Alison's scarf, Alison pleads "no" as A begins to choke her. As 'A' has her leaning backwards a table, still strangling her, Alison reaches for a knife, but as 'A' pulls her forward, Alison drops the sharp instrument.

Pulling up out the front of the DiLaurentis house, Emily cuts the engine and heads inside. Hearing something break, Emily runs into the living room where she finds A attacking Alison, and with a shove, she pushes A away, and grabbing for a book off the bookshelf, hits A before she's thrown into buffet. Crawling over to Alison, Emily wraps her arms around her and pulls her into a hug. Turning the lamp back, Emily tells Alison that they're calling the police, but Alison tells her she can't do that, and she can't call her dad either, "if anyone knows that this happened, I'm never going to be able to leave here". Emily says that if she doesn't want anybody to know, "then fine, okay. But you're not going anyway. At least not tonight".

Caleb is packing when Hanna knocks on the door of the cabin he's staying in, telling him that Toby told her where she could find him. When Caleb asks if something happened, Hanna tells him that Alison was going to leave town, for good, and she was helping her. Caleb says that he understands Alison wanting to leave, and Hanna says she realised she wasn't helping Alison to leave to keep her safe, "part of me wanted her gone". Caleb that it makes sense, Hanna never liked who she was when Alison was around, and Hanna admits that she still wants Alison gone, "Hanna, whatever she's stirred up inside of you is not going to go away. Even if she leaves. I should know, I left Ravenswood and half of it is still with me". When Hanna asks what really happened in Ravenwood, Caleb doesn't answer, and Hanna tells him she hopes he decides to stay. Grabbing his flask, Caleb takes a mouthful before handing it over to Hanna to take a drink.

Going through the security camera footage, Aria hands him a bottle of water and asks if he's seen anything, and he tells her, "just you arriving at my door". Aria can't believe that he still has a camera in the hallway, but Ezra tells her "it makes sense with all the research material here". Aria comes to the conclusion that whoever dropped of the picture had to of done it after she arrived, but before Tanner came, and with Ezra agreeing, he puts the video in fast forward. Aria tells him she's been thinking, and that perhaps he should tell Tanner the truth about Shana, "you know, that she was the one who shot you". When Ezra asks where this is coming from, Aria tells him that he lied to the police and that he could get into serious trouble. Ezra reminds her that if he tells the truth now, they're going to know he's covering something up. Sighing, Aria says that she hates that she's dragged him into this mess. Grabbing her hand, Ezra tells her she didn't, "I dragged myself into it when I decided to write a book". Placing her hand on Ezra's, the two share a look, before Ezra notices something on the security camera footage. Rewinding and going through the footage in slow motion, they spot who left the envelope, and when Aria asks Ezra if he knows who the person is, Ezra tells her that it is Eddie Lamb, "he works at Radley, and he's one of the people I interviewed for the book". Recognising the name, Aria mentions that Eddie Lamb was the one who Spencer talked to earlier, and that "he wouldn't tell her a thing. That it was against Radley policy", and when Ezra says that he must have had a change of heart, Aria questions why he left the picture for Ezra, but Ezra doesn't know.

640px-Screenshot (1042)
In Emily's bedroom, Alison tells Spencer that "it wasn't A. Whoever it was could have killed me, and chose not to", and when Spencer asks who would want to scare her like that, Alison shrugs before Emily suggests Lucas, or Melissa. Shocked at hearing Melissa's name and finding out she's part of Mona's gang, Alison tries to reassure Spencer by saying that didn't know who it was, it was dark and they couldn't see anything. Walking into Emily's bedroom, Aria hugs Alison and asks how this could have happened, Emily says it happened because Alison was alone, Hanna wasn't with her. When Spencer asks where Hanna is, Emily says she didn't call her because she was going to help Alison leave town. Alison tells them not to be pissed at Hanna, "what happened is just proof that I should go", and when she says that they're not closer to figuring out who 'A' is, Aria tells her that might not be true. Pulling a picture from her handbag, Aria passes it to Alison and tells her that Eddie Lamb left it for Ezra. As Alison, Spencer and Emily look the picture over, Alison says that it's of her mother, and Aria tells them that she and Ezra think that Bethany drew it while she was in Radley, "so they did know each other?", but Aria just shrugs in response. Alison gets a text message and reads it aloud to the girls, "see how easy it is for me to kill you? If you leave Rosewood, I will. -A", and Aria says that she doesn't get it, for two years A has been hunting Alison down like a warrior cat. Emily concludes that 'A' wants Alison alive and in town, and when Aria asks why, Spencer questions what's worse than death.
640px-Screenshot (1051)
Alison says she never thanked Emily for what she did tonight, and Emily tells her she didn't do anything, but Alison says she risked her life for her. When Emily says it's getting late, and asks if Alison wants her to take her home, Alison tells her she doesn't want to be alone tonight, and asks if she can stay over. Emily tells her "of course" and tucking Alison in, Emily wonders what to do before climbing onto her bed. Staying up the entire night, Emily watches Alison sleep.

In the Brew, Veronica is reading the news article 'Empty Grave Still Holds Secrets' on her iPad when Spencer comes in to meet her. As Spencer sits, Veronica asks if Toby is coming, but Spencer tells her he isn't, he's taking his step-mom over to the Cavanaugh house to see if anything survived the fire. Answering her ringing phone, Veronica tells the caller that she's with Spencer at the Brew, and she'll be there around noon, she still has to get their stuff and check out of the hotel. After the call has ended, Spencer asks if they're moving back home, and Veronica tells her they are. Spencer is visibly elated, before Veronica tells her that Peter is moving out though. Confused, Spencer says that she thought Veronica said everything went well, and that she believed Peter was telling the truth, and Veronica tells her she does believe him. Veronica goes on to say that leaving Peter isn't just about one lie, it's about years of them. When Spencer says she thought they were happy, Veronica tells her they were, some of the time. Spencer pleads with Veronica to give Peter one more chance, but Veronica tells her she already has, too many.

640px-Screenshot (1060)
Travis is reading a book out the front of Rosewood High when Hanna approaches him, asking if he wants to eat lunch with her later on. Travis tells her he can't, he has things to do, and Hanna apologises for not calling him back last night, as she starts to explain, Travis cuts in, "a lot going on. Right?" Travis tells her he saw Caleb at the Grille this morning, and he figured that's why she has been so distant, when Hanna says that's not the only reason, Travis gets up from the table and tells her he'll give her one less reason. As Hanna tries to stop him from walking away, he tells her he can't keep doing this if she's only in it half way, "I like you too much for that".

In Radley Sanitarium, the director tells Aria that she has a great school record, and they are looking for volunteers, but she needs to know that their patients can be challenging, even aggressive at times. Asking her if she would be comfortable in this kind of environment, Aria tells her, "I'm comfortable".

Tanner drops by Alison's place. She wants Alison and her father to come by the station and answer a few questions about Shana. Tanner wants to know where Alison was that night and seems to be aware of the fact that the story about the girls being in Philly the night Shana died is fake. After Tanner has walked off, Alison get's a text message, and looking over Alison's shoulder, Emily listens as Alison reads it out to her, "Time for the caged bird to sing. -A".

In the final shot of the episode, A is seen putting a message in an envelope addressed to the parents of Bethany Young that reads, “My Deepest Condolences. -A.”, before attaching it to a large bouquet of flowers.
