Esther Marie Potter is the old woman who punctually frequents the bank where Ashley Marin works. When she comes for her yearly appointment, she deposits large bundles of cash into her safe deposit box, rather than investing it in an account. She was very wealthy and had no heirs to succeed her after she died.

Series[]

Season 1[]

In "Keep Your Friends Close", she makes her annual visit and makes a large deposit. She has a short conversation with Ashley Marin then leaves.

In "If At First You Don't Succeed, Lie, Lie Again," it is reported to Ashley and Hanna that Mrs. Potter had a heart-attack and could not be revived.

She appears in only one episode, but her tombstone is seen in "The New Normal," when black-gloved "A" visits the site with flowers to bestow on the grave. The years read "1929 - 2011" and the epitaph, "To sleep, perchance to dream." She was 82 years old when she passed.

Unbeknownst to Mrs Potter, Ashley had stolen money from her deposit box, hoping to return it before the next cycle when Mrs. Potter was to arrive. However, Mrs. Potter had done something unexpected in her last days, scheduling an appointment with Ashley only a few short weeks after her last appointment to see her box. Ashley had panicked, but had found out about Mrs. Potter's death of a heart attack just as she had expected the old woman to arrive. Ashley later returned what was left of the stolen money to the deceased woman's safe deposit box.

When discussing Mrs. Potter with James Lelands' imposter, Ashley compares her to Santa Claus, coming the same time every year bearing riches.

Notes[]

  • Interestingly, Helen Slayton-Hughes, who played Mrs. Potter, graduated from Syracuse University with a BS in drama. In the TV series, it is her nephew James Leland who graduated from Syracuse University, having studied architecture.
  • Helen Slayton-Hughes was born 1930, making her just a year younger than the character she played.

Quote[]

Ashley: Mrs. Potter, how are you?
Mrs. Potter: I’m old. How are you?
